Special E-ccasions

Cards are nice to get in the mail, but I’m always looking for good e-cards that you can look at and not have to throw away or display in the living room when the sender visits. The Internet has mostly just given cards a bad name, even if they are environmentally friendly. After the Flash explosion, people went crazy with blinking animated glittery graphics on websites and cards. So I was ecstatic when I found this site. It combines modern and historical humor with graphics that don’t offend your eyes.

Thinking of Facebook-stalking you this Valentine's Day

Just be aware that a lot of them are inappropriate. Enjoy!

Come Fly with Me, For Cheap!

The Internet has vastly changed the airline industry, especially in the last ten years. It’s now easier than ever to book a flight, through airline websites, or travel sites like Orbitz and Expedia. Dollars and cents matter more when fliers can compare all the airline rates side-by-side.

planeOutside sites have dominated the market recently with travel packages, last minute deals and price comparison, but according to a Wall Street Journal article, many airlines are trying to battle these sites with direct marketing and promotion codes. It’s cheaper for the airline itself to market to frequent fliers and offer special deals to compete with other booking sites.

It’s still smart to compare prices, but the benefit for consumers will be promotion codes knocking off up to 20%, offering free upgrades or even free tickets by following their tweets or subscribing to e-mails.

Airlines also have a lot more public relations work to do, with the explosion of Facebook and Twitter complaints about delays and lost baggage. It’s become essential for these companies to respond to users quickly, and put out enough good press to balance these out. Welcome to the Internet, airlines.

Crash the Bash

haiti

It’s really nice to see how much support there’s been for Haiti in the U.S. after the Earthquake. With Twitter, Facebook and everything else 2.0, it’s easier than ever for us to see what’s going on and do something about it. For me, giving is best when it’s social, when you can gather with other people at an event and know your money is going to something more than food and alcohol. So do both, give alone and give together.

Join Rare Magazine and CharityBash at Molotov Lounge on West 6th tonight at 7 p.m. for their Haiti Benefit. It’s $10 to get in the event (100% of this goes to the charity) and 15% of proceeds from the bar will go to the Haiti relief and development fund. There’s been tons of events like this recently, but Rare Magazine always throws an awesome party and this should be no exception. CharityBash is a group that throws a party every month for a different charity.

Free Beer, No Cover, No Problem

I just got a tip that Speakeasy downtown has Free beer, no cover and a BBQ buffet tonight. Uuuuum yes please. They’ll also have half-time Longhorn trivia for prizes and you can reserve a table. Most of the bars will have some kind of promotion like this, so check out your favorite place and reserve a table! I’m not sure why but I feel like downtown might be crowded.
